Now that we have a studio where we actually have room to create all of the ideas that we can dream up, it has been a lot of fun deciding what to work on each day. Except when the ideas come faster than we can make stuff, then it gets a bit crazy around here.
With the holidays coming up, of course our thoughts turn to Thanksgiving crafts, Christmas projects, and a whole range of possibilities for making “stuff” to celebrate the season. Of course, if you run out of your own ideas, you can always take a journey through the Land of Pinterest, where you will find projects ranging from paper plate turkey centerpieces to painted pumpkins; autumn leaf wreaths to toilet paper roll Pilgrim villages.
Speaking of Pinterest . . . . do you love it or do you hyperventilate every time you scroll through all those images of the most perfect projects ever imagined? I guess it depends on your perspective. I think it is a great place to find inspiration (although I must admit, I rarely have time to pop on over there!), and it is encouraging to see that there is such an interest in home crafting, sewing, cooking, and decorating. But for some women, I know it can cause a bit of anxiety related to the fear of failure.
About a year ago I had created a set of handcrafted, embellished banners for a wedding at our church. Since I had been making these particular banners for a couple of years, without ever having seen anything like them on Pinterest or anywhere else, I never thought about where the idea came from for my banners. I just cut out some pretty letters to spell out the words I wanted on my banners, glued them on some pretty tags, embellished them, and attached them to a matching ribbon. Great fun!
So it was a bit surprising when one of the women at the reception took one look at the banners and said, “Isn’t it amazing what great ideas you can get from Pinterest?” Really? So much for an original idea! I’m sure that there is someone, somewhere, who is far more crafty than this Vintage Mama who has made banners like mine, better than mine, long before I ever thought of doing them . . . . but it is really possible that some people still have their own ideas.
So, HOORAY for Pinterest, and HOORAY for all of you who so generously share your crafting ideas with the world. Just don’t have a meltdown if your craft project doesn’t turn out as perfect as the pictures on Pinterest. It could be that you had to fix supper, or feed a baby, or change a diaper, or rock a sick child and just didn’t have the time to get your craft project picture-perfect. It’s still a very good thing to express your creativity in any way that works for you.
Craft crazy is what’s going on around here – and we might even get around to posting pictures of our creations on Pinterest. I’ll be sure to let you know!
