When my older children were small, this was one of the books that we read from frequently. The musical, rhythmic cadence of the poetry of Robert Louis Stevenson just dances off the page of every one of these poems!
We always loved to hear the words that seem to “swing” up and down, up and down in the poem “The Swing.” You can hear the wind blowing and the galloping of horses in the beat of “Windy Nights.”
One of our favorites was “My Shadow,” with the darting, flitting, and dancing cadence of that Little Shadow: “I have a Little Shadow that goes in and out with me. And what can be the use of him, is more than I can see.”
And the cozy, comforting words of “The Lamplighter” could lull a fussy toddler just by hearing the words, “My tea is nearly ready and the sun has left the sky . . . . ” So many memories of childhood all wrapped up in these verses!
Now we no longer have the babies and toddlers to tuck into bed at night, but our girls are fast becoming young ladies, and with the passing of time, there is joy and a bit of nostalgia. Time has a way of dimming the memories of disappointment and bringing into sharp relief those moments of joy. And so we remember . . . . .
These days, as we continue to work on building our family business, we still remember childhood. We are focused on designing and creating beautiful clothing for toddlers and older children, and we’ll be including designs for mamas, too. There is just such joy in staying focused on the children, and remembering childhood.
Next week we’ll be finishing up with the set-up and organization of our little studio at the Apple Pie Boutique, offering a wide variety of handcrafted, one-of-a-kind home decor, accessories, and wearable art.
And in the midst of all that flurry of activity, we will be finishing up a custom order for a birthday tutu. “Pink and purple, please,” she said, “with just a teeny bit of blue and green.” Yes, ma’am, Miss Wren, we will make your birthday tutu just as you wish!
Perhaps it is because this Mama has invested so much of her life in nurturing and cherishing childhood, in all of my children, that it just seems like the next right thing for me to do: focus the rest of my career making cherished childhood memories for other mamas and their babies. That’s a good way to look at the rest of my life!
