Our dear friend Katherine, from Katherine’s Corner, invited her readers to join her this Christmas season for what she hoped would become an annual event – the Holiday Magazine My Way Challenge. Everyone was invited to join the fun by using a new or old holiday magazine cover (November / December) as inspiration and recreate it our way! We could create a cover image using our own items, or recreate the cover with other images to express our vision for a holiday magazine cover.
All of the participants will be included in a random drawing and two winners will each receive a one-year subscription to Veranda Magazine, Elle Decor, or House Beautiful magazine (winner’s choice).
I met my challenge using Woman’s Home Companion magazine, which was an American monthly publication, published from 1873 to 1957. It was highly successful with a circulation of more than four million during the 1930s and 1940s.

This project was so much fun! At first, I couldn’t decide if I wanted to find a more modern magazine for my inspiration, but as I always do, I found myself drawn to the vintage magazines. So when I discovered the Woman’s Home Companion, which is very much like our Ruby for Women magazine, I knew immediately that this was the one I was going to use for the Holiday Magazine My Way Challenge.
Here is a bit of the history of the Woman’s Home Companion magazine which I found to be interesting, and gave me lots of ideas for upcoming issues of Ruby for Women:
“Woman’s Home Companion is an “all American” women’s magazine focusing on the middle-class domestic sphere in which many women rely on to know what to purchase through advertisements, seeking help in advice columns, outlining social reform, or to simply passing the time by reading literary articles. The four million magazines that Woman’s Home Companion sold by the year 1957, making it “to the top of the highly competitive field of women’s magazines,” contributed to the making of the American magazine.”
