It’s Thursday! Time to Hop!

Gossamer logo 2Starting a new business is a LOT of hard work! And it takes so much time – when you are an artist and a writer, who thinks about things like incorporating, registering with the state, getting the required EIN number (whatever that is!), applying for a Dun and Bradstreet number (really?!?!), and setting up accounts here, there, and everywhere? But, since all of this is necessary to getting my business established correctly, I finally broke down and decided to just get started.

DSCF3881To complicate matters in my situation, I have several different business possibilities that I’ve been working on over the past 10 years. I would focus on one project for a few months, and then something else would come up and take my attention off in another direction. But I always gravitated back to the creative projects, and eventually there were about six different possibilities out here when it finally came time to make the move into full-time business owner mode.

Since it appears that I will never have a shortage of great ideas and creative endeavors in the back of my brain, with a bit of business coaching, it became apparent that we would need to start by registering as an LLC . . . . but which company / name should we use? And, because all of the various components of what we actually do around here don’t fit nicely under any one of the predetermined business names (mamas*little*treasures, Vintage Mama’s Cottage, Tatters to Treasures, Gossamer Wings Studio . . . . . ) we decided to create an “umbrella” business for the LLC and then create all the other projects, in time, under that main company and set each one of them up as a DBA (Doing Business As) –

DSCF3954At least that step helped me get my thoughts untangled and sorted out so that I could escape from my brain freeze. Of course, I would much rather just go out in the studio every morning and make something – but the truth is, no matter how many wonderful things I can create, unless I plan to sell them to other people who appreciate my artistry, all those wonderful things will just gather dust right here in my little studio. I see the truth in going through all of these gymnastics to get set up, organized, and efficient, but it truly is a LOT of work!

The journey has begun and we are walking through the confusion into the light and I’m beginning to see the benefits of having all of the business pieces moving into place. This past week our Tatters to Treasures Collection of winter sweaters was placed in a beautiful boutique in Fort Wayne and we are already getting requests for custom orders; the new website and eCommerce site will be launched this coming week, and will include both the Vintage Mama’s Cottage products (including the Tatters to Treasures Spring Collection), as well as a brand-new line of plus size clothing under the Gossamer Threads brand. My new banner and logo for Gossamer Threads was created by my friend Christie Browning of Revision Magazine, who is also building our new eCommerce site.

DSCF3899I will be starting a class this coming Monday night for entrepreneurs in our community where I am anticipating learning so much more about running a business and growing an idea from its first conception through to a successful enterprise. We are beginning the process of doing a patent search for another product that has great potential to move us beyond the women’s and children’s apparel and home decor categories . . . . more on that later!

And after six years of working on the Ruby for Women project, it looks like we are now building a strong team of leaders who will take over some of my responsibilities for that business and move us closer to the goals that I’ve had in that department for quite some time.

Thanks for bringing up some good business related issues that I haven’t really thought about yet. As a new blogger, there is a lot to learn about the business. I love the idea of taking a class for entrepreneurs, since my background is not in business. Hopefully I can find a similar class here in Madison, WI.
