The Thursday Favorite Things Blog Hop / Linky Party has been part of my weekly schedule for over 250 weeks! I think that calculates to around five years – but then I’ve never been known as a math genius. Most weeks things happen like clock work and I get my Thursday post up on time, which for hostesses is on Wednesday night. Some weeks, however, it just doesn’t happen that way.
This week was one of those times, so I apologize for my late arrival at the party. My girls started school yesterday. Sounds simple enough, and after all, if they were at school all day, what’s the hold up, you might ask?
By yesterday there was simply no way to avoid all of the things that I had been putting on “hold” to do all of the back-to-school responsibilities of a mama these days. I remember back in the day when kids started school by getting on the bus with clean clothes, new shoes, their hair combed and their face washed (and hopefully they remembered to brush their teeth). They took a notebook and a few pencils. Off they went for the first day of school!
That’s not how it is anymore, at least around here. I also realize that we have other options (lots of friends and family, including two older daughters who home school their children so I am aware of that possibility), but for our family the choice to have our children in our public school system is the choice we have made. But I digress.
For one thing it is August. AUGUST! Not September, it is still summer, it is still HOTTER than #%^$& normal, and we are all miserable. In the midst of all the late summer heat and humidity, we begin the annual back-to-school dance of online registrations, athletic practices and tryouts, buying school clothes and shoes (I don’t think there was any extra money in the paychecks this month because someone decided this was the time to start school), buying a million supplies (how many boxes of Kleenex do they REALLY need???), and meetings. Meetings. And more MEETINGS!
It’s a good thing I don’t have anything else to do the first week of school. Wait! I actually do have a few other responsibilities that need my attention, but that’s the part of the story where by Wednesday I am drowning in neglected tasks that I put off to do all that other stuff.
On Monday we went to the mall (I HATE the mall!) to exchange a top for one kiddo, buy sandals for same kiddo, and buy gym shoes for the other kiddo. Then we finished up buying school supplies and spent the rest of the day organizing clothes and supplies so they would be ready for the First Day of School. That was my easy day.
But then there was Tuesday, the Day Before the First Day of School. We have one in middle school and one in high school, so I have to do everything twice. Technology meeting at the high school at 1:00, technology meeting at the middle school at 2:30, volleyball practice at 3:40, rec therapy at 4:00, pick up from volleyball practice at 5:45, volleyball parent meeting at 6:00.
After we got home, there was more anxiety about what to wear the First Day of School (I thought we had that figured out on Monday night?), more checking to make sure everything was in the back packs, and packing lunches. No, I did not feed my children that day. It was a YOYO day . . . . you are on your own!
So by Wednesday morning it was pretty organized and things went really well. The girls got up on time, had breakfast (oh, we made overnight oats on Tuesday night because Gracie thought it would be “cute” to have her breakfast in an adorable little Mason jar with the red and white gingham lids), brushed their teeth, washed their faces and combed their hair. Success! We walked out the door on time, I drove them to school and got them there on time, and everyone survived the First Day of School. But then there was After School on the First Day of School.
Volleyball pictures at 3:30 right before jumping on a bus and heading out for the first volleyball game of the season. Meanwhile, this mama was waiting for the other Little Chick to get off the bus so we could pop in the car and head over to the hospital for her physical therapy appointment. Finally back home by 6:00 p.m. for our on-the-fly supper, homework, and piano lesson before heading back to the high school to retrieve Big Little Chick from the bus following the volleyball game.
By this time it was after 9:00 p.m. (my blogging responsibility deadline), and I still had to feed the volleyball kid (Mom, what’s for supper? at 9:00 p.m. at night is NOT music to a mama’s ears!), direct traffic to make sure they both had showers, brushed their teeth, and went to bed before midnight.
During the day while they are away at their First Day of School? I had an appointment that I had not prepared for (hmmmmm, I wonder why???) so my morning was spent trying to focus on getting everything ready to go. I left at 1:00 p.m. for my appointment (moms actually have stuff to do???) and returned just in time to grab the kiddo off the bus and head to the hospital for physical therapy. By 10:00 p.m. when things were beginning to wind down, there was simply not enough of me left to do ONE. MORE. THING.
But that’s when I get a text message from a dear friend: “Did you get any sewing done this week???” Um . . . . no, not yet.
Today, well I am hopeful. Pay the bills that didn’t get taken care of earlier in the week, buy groceries, and work on some writing deadline projects. This afternoon, volleyball practice at 3:40, piano lesson at 4:30, pick up from volleyball at 5:45 and THEN we can have supper together like normal people. That is still normal isn’t it?
So, if you have time to join us this week for the Favorite Things Blog Hop / Linky Party, I hope you will do that because it is a lot of fun. I’ll try to catch my breath this weekend and maybe I’ll run fast enough to get ahead of the curve next week. Off to juggle a few more responsibilities today, hope to connect with you at the party!
