Thursday Favorite Things: My Geeky Kid

Last night, after our ladies Bible study, I walked out into the church entry and heard the giggling of several 5th grade girls. They were all in a little group chatting and laughing at each other. Every one of them was wearing a pair of these silly looking plastic glasses. One girl had on a pair of HUGE bright blue glasses; another girl had on a pair of vintage Cat Eye glasses; one girl was wearing a pair of rather nondescript glasses that kept sliding down on her nose; and Gracie was wearing these geeky looking big black plastic glasses.

She kept them on all the way home, and then of course she had to take about a million pictures of herself wearing them. Where they came from, and just what prompted this outbreak of “geekiness” is a complete mystery to me. As the newly designated fashion representative for “Geekly Chic” (whatever that is!), it was apparently necessary to tell the world about her new-found designer look.

Of course, she doesn’t know that her sense of humor (which we discovered very early on, when she was only 20 months old) has been a gift from God to us to bring healing and wholeness to our broken hearts. Her antics and silliness (which sometimes make me a bit nutty!) definitely have brought great joy into our home.

There are moments when I get flashes of memories that sometimes turn into poetry. Sometimes I just wish all that stuff spinning around in my brain would quiet down, at least for a minute or two. Our journey of adoption, and the rebuilding of our family has reminded me over and over again that God’s grace goes way beyond the forgiveness of our sins and the gift of salvation; it covers the million little things that haunt us every day and brings hope even in the midst of our darkest days.

I am grateful that God has brought both of our “little girls” into our lives (and of course we adore our bigger kids, too, but this moment in time tends to be consumed with the little ones) and has fulfilled His promise that He has plans for our future:

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not harm you, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11

He Called Her

Perhaps it was my

broken heart

that called her home to me . . . . . .
